Injustice! Blacks were not treated equally. Jefferson achieves his goal of becoming a man at the conclusion of the story. He achieves this by speaking openly, opening up to others, and accepting his death. Jefferson didn't feel like a man at first, as he was called a "pig" several times to try to show jurors that he wasn't in the right state of mind when the shooting occurred. As a result he became psychologically attuned to the discriminatory label he had been given during the trial. His goal set by others, such as Miss Emma and Grant (towards the end), was to prove the white lawyer wrong in calling him a pig. He achieved this by speaking openly with Grant. Grant was the first person Jefferson was able to communicate with by actually speaking his mind and expressing his thoughts. After his mental turmoil, Jefferson is joined by Grant after their argument and Jefferson says, "Hog knows things." he continues: "They'll kill me at Christmas." That was the first time Jefferson actually spoke his true truth...
