Topic > Overuse of antidepressants today and like Aldous Huxley…

Antidepressants are a prescription drug now used by people of all ages. They have become a part of society, so taking antidepressants is not frowned upon. Antidepressants are used to make people feel “happier” and not feel sad. This is shown in the dystopian society in the book Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley in 1932. In that society people use soma, a well-known drug, to not feel pain and are conditioned to think that soma solves everything. Helmholtz and Bernard, the two main characters, don't mind because they want to be able to see the world for what it is. They also don't want soma to change the way they feel; they want to appreciate nature. Also Lenina and Henry love taking soma because then they no longer feel any pain, they are just happy all the time. In our society, people think that antidepressants will not make them feel pain and that these drugs will solve all their problems. Antidepressants have a negative impact on society today as well as in the book Brave New World. The use of antidepressants has increased worldwide and is used by all ages. Doctors write multiple prescriptions, even if the patient doesn't need the drug. “Antidepressant prescriptions in the UK increased by 9.6% in 2011, to 46 million prescriptions” (Are antidepressants overused?). This study took place in the United Kingdom; however, many more prescriptions are being prescribed worldwide. Antidepressant use is reaching record levels because doctors don't want to waste time talking about feelings. Psychologists just want patients to feel better quickly, so they prescribe antidepressants. Humans and doctors think that prescribing drugs...... middle of paper...... changes who a person is and should not be prescribed. Works Cited “Are Antidepressants Overused?” Everyday science.
