The computer exemplifies modern life. They have infiltrated every aspect of our society. There is very little that doesn't rely on this modern monster. Computers are no longer machines that perform simple, basic functions. Most businesses around the world would not be able to function without one or the other form of computer processing. From supermarkets to ATMs, computers have impacted our lives and will continue to do so as the world advances with newer and better technology than ever before. It will continue to evolve. The abacus that emerged in Asia about 5,000 years ago can be considered the first computer, be it manual. "I wish these calculations had been done with steam!" These were the words spoken in 1822 out of frustration by Charles Babbage (1791 – 1871) and with these words he was the first person to conceive the idea of a computer as we know it. A man fascinated by mathematics who went to study at Cambridge in 1811 (N., 1995). He found that he knew more than his tutors, which encouraged him to found the Analytical Society in the hope that they could change the field of mathematics in Britain. He was a co-founder of numerous other companies and a professor of mathematics at Cambridge. He resigned to work on his engines. As an inventor, he led the creation of the modern British postal service, among others, and was at the forefront of British technology. As a founding member of Britain's Royal Astronomical Society he saw the need and opportunity for innovation as these astronomers had to make long, difficult and time-consuming calculations, full of errors. Using his advanced mathematical skills he was determined to create a machine... middle of paper... Abbage's Analytical Engine. We now have programs that replicate the engine's capabilities. With the evolution of time, the computer has also evolved. Technology has become so advanced that I think the power of the computer as well as the power and functions of programs are not yet fully understood by everyone. Computers have certainly improved people's lives. If we think about where it all began in a huge room with thousands of parts and compare it to today, the progress has been far-reaching. In fact, owning a cell phone, itself a powerful tool, is almost as useful as having a laptop. From big old white monitors to paper-thin flat screens. As humans continue to educate themselves, new and innovative ideas will come to the fore and the computer will continue to change and have a greater impact on life and the world well into the future..
