Nineteenth-Century Women: Sarah Stickney Ellis The industrialization of the nineteenth century was a huge social change in which Britain initially took the lead. This meant a new openness to change for the middle class that has continued for generations. Sexual and gender roles became a major focus for many people in this Victorian period. Sarah Stickney Ellis was a writer who argued that it was women's religious duty to improve society. Ellis believed that domestic duties were not the only tasks women should focus on and therefore wrote a book called "The Women of England". The main paper of “The Women of England” by Sarah Stickney Ellis examines how a change in attitude is greatly needed in the way women were perceived during the nineteenth century. She was the second wife of missionary William Ellis who was a missionary and an author writer. During his life he wrote many books chronicling his experiences during his missionary days.
