American and its soldiers fought bravely in countless wars. The freedom gained through those wars gave and took away the rights of American citizens. Through these freedoms, the American people claim the freedom to express themselves, to take a stand for what they believe in, and the right to protect those freedoms. To help protect and limit the freedoms of American citizens, the American government has established laws that its citizens must follow. However, has society begun to establish its own laws according to the worldview of the majority, and have these overly clouded worldviews begun to subjugate the voices of other groups? Through these social "laws" society has begun to contradict what they allow and do not allow to be said; and some of their social laws have begun to prevent some groups from having a say. Social “laws” do provide some good boundaries that need protection, but society has begun to enact social laws that violate or contradict other free speech laws. Although the Constitution grants all Americans free speech, free speech requires social boundaries. Double standards in free speech have changed over time. Throughout history, society considered slavery acceptable. American society considered Africans property and treated them as such. Some people saw the treatment of Africans as wrong, and although society tried to curb their voices, they made themselves heard. Harriet Beecher Stowe played an important role in this, when she published her anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, in 1852. Through her story of Simon Legree and Uncle Tom, she exposed the horrors of slavery. His story ultimately brought awareness to a problem in society and how they view Africans.
