Topic > The Great Change in Kafka's Metamorphosis - 942

Although Gregor transformed into an insect, the real Metamorphosis occurred before the change and with the whole family. Kafka's short story The Metamorphosis reflects ideals about industrialization and existentialism at the turn of the century. In the story Gregor turns into an insect and the whole family has to deal with it in different ways. Many characters go through a metamorphosis in the novella. While the changes may not be physical, changes have occurred noticeably in Gregor, Mr. Samsa, and Grete. Gregor's main transformation didn't happen when he turned into an insect, but through changes in his life. Gregor's life before he turned into some kind of insect was like a bumblebee. He would live his life doing as others told him. In the story, Gregor says, “But for now I have to get up because my train leaves at five” (Kafka 4), which explains how he was simply someone who lived life according to a schedule, just like a worker bee. But even before he became a traveling salesman he was another person: “On the opposite wall hung a photograph of Gregor from his military service period” (16). He was a military man, so at this point; he has already changed from someone who was in the army, to a boring worker in a modern industrial world. The biggest change that happened to Gregor was in his appreciation of music. At first Gregor hardly noticed his sister's violin, but at the end of the story he says: “Was it a beast if music could move him like that? He felt as if the road to his unknown longings was becoming clearer” (49). Gregor has never appreciated music so much in his entire life, but the changes he has gone through have resulted in a new indulgence towards it. The obvious assumption about Gregor's metamorphosis... middle of paper..., she had strong feelings towards her brother and loved him, but in the end the biggest change in the story occurred. “He has to go…it's the only way…we have no brothers…he obviously wants to take over the whole apartment” (53). He wanted to kill his brother, because of the work and the pain he brought to the family. She even went so far as to say, “We have to get rid of them” (52). In conclusion, the biggest change in the story was that of a kind and loving sister, towards a murderous human, who no longer has a brother. Although Gregor may seem like the only one who went through a metamorphosis, his entire family was with him on the journey. . What if everyone looked at their life this way, and instead of turning into a bug, they changed a little? What effect would it have on your family if you woke up a different person?
