Introduction Throughout the charismatic play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses a diverse number of techniques to develop numerous themes including ambition, greed and power. Shakespeare does this through the careful manipulation of foreshadowing, character development, and irony. Foreshadowing Shakespeare uses the technique of foreshadowing to increase tension as the play becomes more intense. It is incredibly obvious that he uses the group of witches as his main source of foreshadowing. It is when Macbeth first meets the witches that they share their thoughts and revelations with him. When the witches initially see Macbeth, they greet him with three names: "Wheat of Glamis," "Wheat of Cawdor," and "King of the Underworld," which foreshadow all the days to come.
