Topic > Typography - 911

One of the most important aspects of graphic design is typography. Typography plays a huge role not only in its basic function of communication, but also as a visual design element that can easily make or break a work. Knowing this, I strive to be very strong typographically. One artist I take typographic inspiration from is Michael Bierut, who happens to be great with typography. Bierut graduated from the Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning in 1980. After graduation, he continued to work for Vignelli Associates. In his ten years with Vignelli, he became vice president of graphic design. Bierut then moved to Pentagram's New York office, where he remains today. He has worked with large clients at Pentagram ranging from museums, sports teams, the Walt Disney Company and beyond. Bierut has also received numerous awards, including the coveted AIGA (Pentagram) medal. While I'm not yet at liberty to compare my young career to Bierut's and his veteran status graphically, there are similarities. First of all, Bierut is a Senior Critic in Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art. I would also like to work at a university at some point in my career. Additionally, Bierut has worked with some notable and visually stunning clients. I would love to work for clients like the Walt Disney Company or a professional sports team. He also has his works in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. A piece in the permanent collection of a museum like MoMA would be a great achievement in my career. If one were to take a look at a selection of works from Bierut's career, the marvelous typography would undoubtedly be a consistent discovery. As in the rebranding... in the middle of the paper... very well in the Bierut posters at Yale, but I certainly chose a different method. Socially, these pieces differ. The social aspect has many similarities, but in essence they are different. Bierut posters are pure promotion. My article supports the idea of diversity among designers. As for physical discontinuities, they are present in the expected print. Bierut's posters will be printed and plastered on every wall at Yale. My article is printed to be inside a magazine, preferred to the reader. In the end, these pieces are very similar. I completely agree with this, being compared to the winner of the most prestigious medal in the field of graphic design. I often look to Bierut for inspiration and I am aware that this shows up in my work. Everyone must have someone to inspire them and Michael Bierut is definitely one of them for me.
