Justice. It's something everyone wants, something we aspire to, even something that sparks. However, when we think of lawyers, we think of superheroes with expensive educations, who enter the courtroom and serve justice. What no one thinks about is the person who helped the lawyer get there, the paralegal who prepares the necessary documents, the paralegal who makes sure his lawyer is in the right place at the right time. A paralegal is crucial and in some cases vital to our justice system, but is often overlooked. To understand what a paralegal does, we must first understand what the job of a lawyer entails. Black's Law Dictionary defines a lawyer as “a person learned in the law; as a lawyer, consultant or solicitor; a person who practices law." Lawyers generally have about seven years of college education under their belt and have the authority to argue their clients' case before a judge and jury. Just because a person has a bachelor's degree law does not necessarily mean that you are an expert lawyer. You could have the best education money can buy but still be a terrible lawyer. Practice and careful preparation are needed before going to court, but there is one more thing that is invaluable to a lawyer: experience. All the lessons in the world can't prepare you for the courage it takes to stand before a judge and a jury with your client beside you trusting you to fight had the opportunity to witness the action behind the scenes as a young lawyer recently prepared for his first trial. What I saw is not what would normally happen, but it is something that happens. This lawyer was given about three hours to prepare for his first trial, he had about three years... middle of paper... from a lawyer, law firm, corporation, government agency or other entity that he performs has specifically delegated the substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.
