Julius Caesar was the last leader of the Roman Republic. It is debated whether or not Caesar was a successful leader, however his influence on society then and society today is impossible to deny. Caesar is still relevant in modern society due to his enormous influence on culture, language, military and political tactics, the invention of a modern calendar, and his iconic representation of the Roman Empire. One of Caesar's lasting achievements is the innovation of a new language and a new calendar. Caesar was very interested in codes such as Morse code and Pig Latin, but he was credited with inventing the Caesar Substitution Cipher (Codes and Ciphers) code. In this code, each letter in the message is replaced with the letter three positions down in the alphabet (A would be replaced with D, etc.). This code is often used to write messages that could easily be intercepted during war. He was also a very talented writer; some of his works are the "Gaelic War" and the "Civil War", which were the names of Caesar's War Commentaries. These commentaries are still read today for a first-hand account of the wars, as they were originally pages he wrote in his journal while fighting. Caesar is also often mentioned today. His last words were "Et tu, Brute?" which from Latin means “You too, Brutus”. This phrase has always been known to be his last words, but Shakespeare made them famous by writing a play called "Caesar," which contained the exact words he spoke. Shakespeare's play made Caesar quite popular and most likely led to the interesting correlation between his unique name and the very popular salad dressing. Caesar's calendar is perhaps the most famous of his attributions to the modern world. He made the… paper center… he definitely would have taken a few lessons from Julius Caesar over the course of his life, Caesar helped shape one of the most widespread and popular religions today. Caesar is impacting their everyday lives, whether they know it or not. Whenever you see the King of Diamonds in a deck of cards, you look at Caesar. Every time you put Caesar salad dressing on a pile of fresh cheese and lettuce, you help carry on the Caesar name.
