There are numerous industries that are believed to have had monopolies throughout their respective histories, such as the technology, energy, and consumer products industries. They are seen as monopolies, because not only does one of the many companies in the industry have a larger market share, but the company also has the power to adjust prices on many of its products. Monopoly can occur in any industry, even confectionery. Mars inc. and Mondelez int. they have powerful stories and an important place in the confectionery industry. The question is: is it enough to consider them virtual monopolies? Although these companies are not even close to owning 50% or more of the confectionery industry market, they can still be considered companies that have created a virtual monopoly. Mars and Mondelez companies are the two leading confectionery companies in the confectionery industry market and they seem to have the power to be called virtual monopoly, because both are enterprises that provide more than one particular confectionery product. Furthermore, the lack of substitute goods equivalent to the raw materials supplied by Mars and Mondelez gives these companies power over the cost and supply of goods. If they continued to take control of the candy market, this means that these two companies would move closer to the title of monopoly, defined by Robert Feenstra:(“A monopoly exists when a particular person or firm is the sole supplier of a particular product. Monopolies are therefore characterized by a lack of economic competition to produce the good or service and a lack of viable substitute goods. “Monopolize” refers to the process by which a company acquires the ability to raise prices or exclude. comp.... .. middle of the sheet ....../candy-fun-facts/14)http://books.google.com/books?id=g26Rtxv4v8MC&pg=PT110&lpg=PT110&dq=Monopolies+are+so +characterised+by+a+lack+of+economic+competition+to+produce+the+good+or+service+and+a+lack+of+viable+substitute+goods&source=bl&ots=e6xgLV2FMr&sig=Tl6EK9jVa2BLNDz4spHkh1LFiBM&hl=en&sa=X&ei= bDdCU8yZEejIyAGutYDYDg&ved=0CDo Q6AEwAg# v=onepage&q&f=false14)http://247wallst.com/investing/2011/03/22/the-new-generation-of-american-monopolies/2/15)http://usatoday30.usatoday .com/money/industria/food/2008-04-28-buffet-mars-wrigley_N.htm16)http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2013/03/31/the-sweet-secret-world -of-forrest- mars-fortune-1967/17)http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/21/mondelez-kraft_n_1533656.html18)http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2012/10 /02/kraft-mondelez-to-trade-as-separate-companies/19)http://www.mondelezinternational.com.au/about-us/history
