Topic > OAS Special Mission to Mexico 1994 - 1105

In July 1994, Mexico erupted into a crisis after the assassination of the Institutional Revolutionary Party's presidential candidate, Luis Donaldo Colosio, in Tijuana. The Organization of American States had to intervene due to the riots and political clashes in Mexico. The Institutional Revolutionary Party has been ruling the country of Mexico for a long time now. They were expected to win the election that same year until the tragedy. The assassination of the presidential candidate was the breaking point of the political problems Mexico faced. In addition to the problems reflected in the assassination of the presidential candidate, there are many groups that threaten the current government due to their opposition to NAFTA. Mexico has not only gone through a political crisis, but also a social one. The guerrillas have turned against the government because they feel threatened by the way the government has handled their affairs with the indigenous people. The St. Kitts and Nevis delegation believes that this is a serious problem that should be addressed immediately. To address this conflict we must consider the many possible solutions presented to us. The St. Kitts and Nevis delegation suggests that the OAS supervise the elections to ensure that no fraud is presented, it should also prevent clashes between members of opposing political parties and finally there should be international intervention to mediate and supervise the conflict. in this way it is possible to reach a consensus between members of both parties. During this difficult time, the Organization of American States convened a special mission to assist and help unravel the chaos in the country. Mexico is... at the center of the card... The OAS, the Delegation of St. Kitts and Nevis, believes that every person within the country of Mexico deserves to have equal human rights. In this case it would be the right to personal security and freedom of movement. Mexico is in revolt because indigenous people have been deprived of their human rights and this has led to territorial disputes. The natives are very afraid. The delegation from St. Kitts and Nevis believes that a specific territory should be allocated as an indigenous reserve so that they can live peacefully in their own environment. It is undeniable that immediate action must be taken, therefore the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation urges other OAS delegates to support Mexico in all their matters and endeavors, thus helping to ensure the safety of all Mexican citizens . like the indigenous populations of Mexico.
