Topic > Beyond Dreams: Identifying and Addressing Conflict

The film I have chosen to focus on for the purposes of this reflection paper is titled Beyond Dreams. I have considered this piece my favorite since I first read it more than ten years ago, and I was pleased that I was given the responsibility of identifying the conflict; as I did not realize this content existed prior to completing this assignment. When reflecting on the film, I had always emphasized the cinematography, the emotional attachment of the characters, and the progressive idea of the afterlife. I still appreciate these attributes, although I am now better able to understand that characters' drive for intimacy is often rooted in their ability to adequately deal with conflict. This film depicts a happily married couple with two teenage children whose lives seem idyllic. They are educated, financially successful individuals who possess a genuine love for both their children and their chosen professions. Tragically, the children die in a car accident early in the film; leaving both mother and father (Chris and Annie) to cope with the loss of their children. Annie blames herself for their deaths because she allowed her focus on work to prevent her from spending time with the children. Four years later, just as Annie is starting to get her life back with the help of her loving husband, Chris is killed in another car accident, also related to Annie's work. This unbearable loss creates tremendous inner turmoil that drives Annie to suicide and, therefore, to her own hell. Most of the film takes place in Paradise, where the children are blissfully happy, although worried about the state of their mother. Chris, however, isn't satisfied with just worrying about her. He is determined to overcome what is… middle of paper… everyday life. Works Cited Blake & Mouton, 1984. “Interpersonal Conflict and Conflict Management.” Devito, Joseph A.
