Goals/Objectives: The overall goal of this Afro-Latino practicum was to learn and educate other individuals about different Latino and Hispanic countries compared to their Afro-Latino countries -Latin groups. In doing so I chose to focus my study on the Afro-Latino groups of Colombia and Panama. Collecting my data through numerous network connections with multiple communities and organizations was key to reaching my target groups. A series of interviews and questionnaires were also conducted to enrich the success of my data. Overall my goal was to see the function of race and ethnicity and how it relates to the sociological effects of these Afro-Latino groups. Consequently, in some cases I have studied, being an immigrant can mask one's beliefs and tend to deny one's true roots due to social tensions and pressures. Through my experience, in some cases I have seen that being "black" or being "African" perceives negative connotations for some individuals and causes them to separate from their roots. For the purposes of my study, when completing the questionnaire, when an Afro-Latino approached the question by referring to their African roots, they alternatively ignored the African part of the question and responded by saying that they are only Latino or Latina. The conflict between race and ethnicity came up throughout the time I administered my questionnaires. On the questionnaires, many people wondered what they should answer for the question that referred to their “race” or “ethnicity.” Some people saw it as a divide and how the terms can be used as a negative term or a positive term to label a group of people.
