Cyber-bullying Bullying is repeated from generation to generation. Today's society makes bullying possible without being face to face. This type of bullying is called cyberbullying. Teens use their electronic advice as weapons to attack other people with hurtful things through the use of text messages or social networking sites. Cyberbullying can “emotionally harm a person” (Media). It can also make them have low self-esteem. In our society today, cyberbullying is a new type of problem that many teenagers face. “Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another (media) person.” It can happen anywhere there is Internet access. Cyberbullying usually occurs in high schools and middle schools. Cyberbullying does not involve face-to-face verbal or physical attacks between people. It affects everything that is published online. Online posting may include false rumors, lewd text messages, and pretending to be someone else. Like traditional bullying, cyberbullying can be painful. It can cause someone's self-esteem to plummet and undermine your sense of security. It can affect their health by causing stress and making them angry. Cyberbullying can also affect how a teen attends school. There are two types of cyberbullying. The first type is proxy. In which "use others to help the victim of cyberbullying, with or without the knowledge of the accomplice (STOP)." The other type is direct attacks. The first way to attack someone directly is through text messages. People without realizing it may send threats or abusive messages. There can also be a textual war. It's when a group of people gang up on a person and send them hurtful things. The…half of the card…proof, so that he or she can prove that he or she is a victim of cyberbullying. The last step is to block them. "Most devices have settings that allow people to electronically block the bully or bullies from sending notes. (STOP)" With this completely new technology in our society, teens are faced with cyberbullying every day. Cyberbullying is a worldwide problem, happening everywhere you go. Cyberbullying occurs through emails, text messages and websites. It is a threat to today's teenagers. It can cause teenagers to have low self-esteem, depression, anger and can even lead to suicide. There are many ways teens can prevent cyberbullying. To protect their children, parents need to educate them, so that children can try to avoid facing cyberbullying in the future. Because cyberbullying is online, it can be anonymous, which may not result in any consequences.
