Topic > The Writings of William Blake - 1118

William Blake was one of the greatest English (Tejvan) writers of the nineteenth century, but his genius went unnoticed until his death. Blake was a free spirit who often spoke his mind and was very sensitive to cruelty. At the age of twenty-five he married a woman named Catherine Boucher. They created a book of all of Blake's poems called Songs on Innocence, which was not very popular while he was alive. On the other hand, Blake's other book of poems, Songs of Experience, was much more popular. These two collections are so magnificent because they are two different forms of writing successfully written by one man. Two important poems written by William Blake were "The Tyger" and "The Lamb". The Lamb is from Songs of Innocence while The Tyger is from Songs of Experience, they may share different perspectives on the world but they complement each other very well. Blake believed that life could be seen from two different perspectives, namely innocence and experience. For Blake, innocence is no better than experience. Both states have their positive and negative sides. The positive side of innocence is joy and optimism, while the negative side is naivety. The negative side of the experience is cynicism, but the positive side is wisdom (Shmoop editorial team). The Tiger and the Lamb are two completely different styles of poetry, but they would not have the same effect on the reader if a poem did not exist. The "Songs of Innocence" represent the naive hopes and fears that consume children's thoughts. Overall, Songs of Innocence contains idyllic poems, many of which deal with childhood and innocence. Idyllic poems have quite specific qualities, in which they are usually positive, sometimes extremely happy or optimistic and harmless...... middle of paper ......ge and violence. Despite their differences, they both seem to complement each other in all the necessary ways. William Blake did an amazing job putting these two very opposite poems in unison and uniting conflicting animals to create a new perspective on the world. Works Cited Pettinger, Tejvan.
