When readers meet the protagonist Elizabeth, she is portrayed as a beautiful, cheerful daughter with a sharp intellect and a pleasant sense of humor. Some of Elizabeth's attributes seem comparable to her father, Mr. Bennet, whose intellect and gentlemanly demeanor she inherited. Although many of Elizabeth's positive qualities seem similar to those of her father, it is also true that she gets his cynicism to see through and mock others. At the beginning of the novel, especially in reference to her first impressions, Elizabeth is immediate in judging and criticizing others. Elizabeth is quick to judge Wickham as a professional and kind gentleman. Wickham instead leads Elizabeth to believe not only lies about Darcy but also falsehoods about his past and himself (76). When she first meets Mr. Darcy, she is struck by his arrogant and aloof demeanor, which shows that Darcy creates a proud impression on others.
