Vietnam is a country with a long history. The Chinese dominated Vietnam for 1,000 years. The French also dominated the country for 61 years. However, Vietnam receives the most influence from China, which is one of the most powerful countries in the world after America. Although Vietnam receives the most influence from China, Vietnam and China also have very special customs that exist in each country. This essay will compare and contrast their religion, festivals, and eating style. First, both Vietnam and China have very similar religion. Before, Vietnam had different names. One of the first names was Dai Viet. The name manifested itself across the nation after 1000 years of living in pain and humiliation caused by the Chinese. After this period, Vietnam was almost recognized by China. The Chinese influenced Vietnamese culture long ago. In the past, most Vietnamese followed Confucianism and Buddhism. Confucianism, which entered Vietnam starting from Chinese dependence. According to a website called “History”: “Confucius, who lived 2,500 years ago, never attempted to found a religion but was content to be a scholar and teacher.” (history, n.d.). Confucianism began in China long ago, influencing Vietnam, and the Vietnamese people transformed it and made it different while remaining its specific style, called "Nom". The Vietnamese changed and Vietnameseized the Han script. In China, Confucianism existed for a long long time but that is not a real religion. Confucius who created and spread developed Confucianism. “In China, you can find many Confucius temples, which is an important place for important exam candidates. In China, on the last day of the year, they usually prepare a special cake called “Ba Chang” which is very similar to “Banh Chung” in Vietnam but with different ingredients. On the first day of the new year, Chinese people depend on parallel of age they bring or invite that human being to their home as they call “callers” for the whole year lucky and smoothly. The style of food in Vietnam is very influenced by China. Finally, after 1000 years of Chinese rule, the Vietnamese fight fiercely. However, we absorb their culture and make it our own. Maintaining, improving and protecting what we have acquired in the past is the responsibility of each of our young generations living in an “S” shaped country”..
