In this love story of Benedick and Beatrice, we are shown a love/hate relationship they have for each other. Beatrice doesn't hold back and verbally insults Benedetto even before his arrival, stating: "It's exactly like this: he has nothing less than a rag man: but for the stuff, ---well, we're all mortal." () I can only laugh because this relationship is so witty, sincere and plays with words that are used almost like a weapon. You have to wonder why there is so much hatred between Beatrice and Benedick, because we know he is a war hero and we respect him as such. I think Shakespeare wanted their exchange to be almost a flirtatious relationship, but neither of them wants to admit how they really feel. This deflection of real feelings is another example of deception that continues in this play. Their verbal exchanges are harsh but in reality behind these words lies the truth of their relationship, as if they were wearing masks. There is a strong connection between these two when Beatrice was exchanging words with Don Pedro about Benedick when she said “indeed, my lord, he lent him to me for a while; and I gave him a chance to use it, a double heart for his one: bride, once before he won it from me with false dice, so Your Grace may well say I lost it”.
