Topic > Discussion on Is There a There in Cyberspace by Mr. Barlow

Do you know what unintentional and intentional communities are? If you're like me, then you have no idea what it is or how it relates to society. That is until I read John Perry Barlow's selection “Is There a There in Cyberspace”. Are you aware of what I'm talking about or would you like to know more? Maybe you're not even aware of what unintentional means. The dictionary definition for this word is "not on purpose." In Barlow's discussion of these types of communities, he states that "Unlike most modern Americans, I grew up in a real place, an entire unintentional community called Pinedale, Wyoming" (Barlow 164). Pinedale wasn't created on purpose, but nevertheless it was still created and acted as a community. He goes on to detail that they were a tight-knit community who always supported each other through thick and thin. Even though it was an unintentional community, it was not without purpose. They came together with a common goal which was to support each other and be a community. Intentional is the exact opposite of unintentional. This word means "to do on purpose". In Barlow's article, he tells readers that cyberspace communities were intentional communities. These places were created on purpose but still had the same goals as an unintentional community. They were very much like a traditional community living together and helping each other virtually instead of in person. Pinedale, where he grew up, was an unintentional community. So, to put it simply, an intentional community would go and live in a big city like New York. It has been there for a long time and is a well-known place. In that community, people care about each other and help each other. Even though Pin... in the center of the paper... ugh they never actually saw each other as he spoke and compared the two he embellished his discussion of his topic on communities. I honestly believe he felt lost and angry at the same time at the way people started acting, but when he found the dead heads it encouraged him like it used to when he lived there. Pinedale. Unintentional and intentional communities are opposites but share the same common purpose. Finally, I discussed the effectiveness of these comparisons and contrasts in embellishing Barlow's discussion of communities. Overall, I believe that even though nowadays people don't care anymore and communities are shrinking, we can still have heart and find people who still care about each other, even if it has to happen online .
