Topic > 1988 Terrorist Attack on Pan Am Flight 103 - 1320

It has been widely accepted by the media portrayal of terrorist attacks, which normally occur in the streets of some Middle Eastern city, within a war-torn village seized by a drug cartel, on a train or in a nightclub in Europe, or somewhere other than the sky. As stated in the National Counterterrorism Center: Report on Terrorism (2011), traditional or well-known tactics account for approximately 80% of all attacks, terrorist attacks directed against airlines or aerial vehicles are less than 2%. For this reason, many of these threats are downplayed or their relevance is downplayed in order to allocate resources to investigations. Prior to the attack on Pan Am Flight 103, the intelligence data received had been released, however no high-level officials were directly involved in the security measures necessary to counter the event. December 21, 1988 was a day when the consequences of complacency would be felt by the nation. On 21 December 1988 a civilian airliner exploded over the small town of Lockerbie, located in the Dumfries and Galloway region of south-west Scotland. On board there were civilians representing 21 different countries; 189 those coming from the United States. In all, 270 people lost their lives that day; 259 passengers and crew and 11 deaths on the ground. Due to the altitude, speed and weather conditions of the region that day, parts and bodies of the planes were scattered over an area of 2000 square kilometers. According to the CIA report: “Terrorist Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 2012)”, months after the plane crash and the end of formal recovery operations, a piece of burnt shirt was discovered. The piece contained a fragment of the circuit board that the heat of the explosion had fused into the polyester fabric of the T-shirt. The organizers, the resource providers,… middle of the paper… it's not complete proof, it's not a guarantee, and it's the right step in the right direction.
