A Link in Time Massachusetts is one of the original thirteen colonies that made up the United States in the late 18th century. In 1798 the “new” State House was built across Boston Common on the top of Beacon Hill (quote 1). The building's historical significance is evident as it was built on land owned by Massachusetts' first elected governor, John Hancock. Furthermore, the person who designed the State House was Charles Bulfinch, the leading architect of the time. In this article I will discuss the political and social significance of the Massachusetts State House through its design (exterior and interior), its operations, and its cultural function as a historic building. First, the sheer size of the building and its grounds is overwhelming. view because it extends for two blocks. The exterior of the State House has a distinct exterior composition that speaks to its aesthetic nature and historical value. The red brick walls on the south-facing Bulfinch Front speak to the building's tradition and durability, while the white finishes serve as aesthetic components complementary to the solid, foundational bricks. The building's towering pillars allude to the strength and dominance of the government and the national pride of the United States. Although Massachusetts has similar buildings that mimic the exterior composition of solid red brick, trim, and pillars, one distinction that sets the State House apart is its dome. The State House dome was originally made of wood shingles, but is now clad in copper and covered in 23-karat gold (quote 1).
