The timeless author, George Orwell, once said: "During times of universal deception, speaking the truth becomes a revolutionary act." (George 6). Simply put, he himself provided an excellent description of the modernist period and Orwell's beliefs. The concepts present in George Orwell's writings were influenced by the modernist period, which lasted from 1914 to 1939, which placed a great emphasis on the horrific, chaotic, and ultimately futile events of life along with the desire to experiment with new forms of literature. Matterson1). Several authors have had the ability to capture those feelings and radiate them to numerous readers. Orwell's works represented a change in attitude from the previous period, Realism, as well as providing inspiration for future generations. Wars, government corruption and high tensions created the pessimistic views typical of Modernism but had the ability to influence the opinions and writings of George Orwell, one of the most inspiring authors of all time. Born in India and raised in England, George Orwell was exposed to various events throughout his life that would have a huge impact on himself and his literary techniques. As a child, Orwell obviously had strong potential in the world of literacy and in return received the King's Grant for a boys' primary school. After completing school, he joined the Imperial Indian Army but resigned in 1927 due to his undeniable hatred of authority (George 2). His time at school and in the army were key events in his life because they contributed to the formation of opinions that he would later write about in great detail.
