RU486 provides an almost immediate and early end to an unwanted pregnancy. However, such choices carry possible long-term consequences. The consequences involve physical side effects, as well as emotional, mental and possible spiritual repercussions. If such findings prove true, how can such life-altering obstacles be overcome? Abortion is the premature termination of a pregnancy resulting from the escape of the products of conception from the uterus or the loss of a pregnancy with or without a specified cause. Causeless abortion would be known as miscarriage. Involuntary abortion occurs when intentional measures are taken to terminate the pregnancy. An abortifacient is a chemical substance that causes an induced abortion. There are several abortifacients on the market. Mifeprisone or brand name Mifeprex and misoprostol or brand name Cytotec are combined to form RU486 or the abortion pill. Methotrexate is usually used with misoprostol. However, misoprostol can also be used alone. The drugs work to break down the placenta or lining of the uterus that supports pregnancy and fetal growth, interferes with the process of cell growth and multiplication, and causes softening of the cervix or opening of the uterus resulting in expulsion of the fetus. Incomplete abortion can be a problem for a woman who says she would choose a medical, but not surgical, abortion.
