Topic > Gatsby's Gold Coast Story - 1088

Throughout history, Long Island has become an important part of New York's impressive past. From the creation of the Long Island Railroad to the postwar development of Levittown, Long Island has become a truly remarkable place. Long Island has been referenced in many ways, but Long Island is best known for its setting in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald described New York City and Long Island, also known as "The Gold Coast", as extremely vivid and vibrant in the 1920s. During that time, some of the richest people in America settled on the “Gold Coast.” Although The Great Gatsby was not based on a true story, the story's setting was based on real locations on Long Island, which still exist today. Unfortunately not everyone was so lucky. The “Gold Coast” is located in the towns of North Hempstead, Huntington, Oyster Bay, Nassau County, and western Suffolk.1 The North Shore setting plays an extreme role in Fitzgerald's novel. The Great Gatsby is well known for its characters, former wealth and elite power in the "East Egg" of coastal Long Island. The “West Egg” was the less wealthy of the two. In the book, Fitzgerald explains the differences in the setting of East and West Egg. East Egg is described as very conservative with old-style mansions and a more elite status.2 West Egg is seen as flashy and flashy with brightly colored clothes and cars, which is why it was later despised by Easterners.3There are many mansions well known in The Gold Coast, some are open to the public and others have also been used in feature films. These famous homes include Old Westbury Gardens, Hemptstead House at Sand's Point, The Vanderbilt, and Oheka Castle.
