Patricia Steffes worked at the Pepsi Company for over twenty years. During one of his last years at the company, he was awaiting a promotion. However, Pepsi did not give her the job. Instead they hired a man who was African American. Steffes was outraged by this incident by claiming that due to Pepsi's "aggressive minority promotion program", Pepsi hired a less qualified minority candidate to comply with this program. Steffes wrote to the Equal Opportunity Commission and a Pepsi executive to file a discrimination complaint against her. What Steffes failed to recognize was the main reason Pepsi had this program. White people, like Patricia Steffes, who say they are discriminated against call it reverse racism. The notion of reverse racism has many different views and many different opinions from both minorities and whites. However, due to many individuals' inherent perceptions, minorities' lack of true power, and individuals' lack of respect for the law, claims that reverse racism exists in the United States today are unfounded. In 1865, Congress ratified the Thirteenth Amendment, which formally abolished slavery in the United States of America. This was a necessary step for the United States to advance into the era of progressivism. However, although the Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery, it did not prohibit segregation and discrimination against minority groups, especially African Americans. It was only with the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, which overturned Plessy v. Ferguson's separate but equal, which the government specifically addressed segregation.
