Manipulate and deceive spectators with sound phrases and images In Duguid and Brown's article "The social life of documents", the authors mention how documents usually they tend to raise more debate rather than suppress it. This is true, as there can be countless possible interpretations for a single document. However, while there is no “right” interpretation of a document, there must be a set of standards that must be met to judge all of these competing ideologies. This is where the use of sound bites and images used in the news media tends to be a source of debate. First, sound clips are defined as 'film segments within a news story that show someone speaking without interruption', while image snippets are defined as 'film segments within a news story where someone is shown but not listened to' (Esser, 3). Sound messages and images are recontextualized and used as tools to manipulate viewers into supporting the news program's points of view. Not only that, but sounds and images are used to sensationalize stories in order to attract a larger audience for the news program. People look to the news to provide an accurate portrayal of events, but with the increasing manipulation of sounds and images, the "truth" is being influenced by journalists' opinions. Journalistic integrity is undermined as journalists take responsibility for shaping stories with their own narratives and points of view. The problem is that people no longer have access to unmediated information from which to draw their own conclusions.
