The essay “Lessons from Lost Worlds” was written by Jared Diamond, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, physiologist, and ecologist. In the article, Diamond lays out his thoughts on the world's past, present and future environmental issues and how history could play a role in preventing future disasters. At the beginning of the piece, he appeals to the emotions by using his children as a real-life example. Using specific cases of ancient collapsed civilizations, he appeals to the reader through logic. Diamond effectively uses both appeals to logic and emotion, providing hard-hitting facts and concrete examples that drive home his "cautiously optimistic" message about the world's ability to prevent future environmental problems. One of the convincing methods used by Diamond is the use of emotions. Emotionally charged words and phrases are used to persuade readers by evoking strong feelings within them. While his use of logic can influence the minds of the audience, it is also very important to influence their hearts as well. Using vivid emotions such as fear and hope, he hits his audience directly in the heart. Fear is undoubtedly one of the strongest emotions, a fact that Diamond uses to his advantage. He draws on things his readers are familiar with, like nuclear war and globalization, and forces them to consider “what if.” Diamond states: “…terrorists could, at worst, kill 'only' a few tens of millions of us. Even bigger environmental problems that could affect all our children are…global warming and land and water degradation.” In that passage he uses the common anxiety of terrorism to show how concerned he thinks people should be about environmental issues. Diamond also talks about globalization in relation to the... focus of the document ......re evident when paired with articles that echo similar evidence. One of the essay's greatest strengths is the structured and cohesive examples Diamond provides. The information is laid out in a logical and informative way that gives the piece a solid framework. Another strength is his large vocabulary which allows him to insert the most appropriate phrases in the most effective places. Diamond's article pairs emotion and logic well in a compelling way that resonates with his readers, resulting in an informative and interesting essay. Works Cited Diamond, Jared.
