Does studying predominantly in English at university lead to a loss of Arabic literacy and language skills? Indeed, there are many points of view on this important issue; education and technology are developing rapidly all over the world and every nation competes to become the best at teaching in English, forgetting the side effects that might occur with the country's native language. English is considered the primary language used throughout the world; consequently, to communicate with people from all over the world, Arabs must learn to speak and write in English. There are different opinions on whether studying in English affects our literacy and skills in Arabic. There are some parents who agree that English is influencing Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). On the other hand, other parents disagree and think that English has no effect on MSA or Emirati Arabic (ElBahi, 2013). From my point of view, I think that studying in English leads to a loss of Arabic literacy and language skills because it may reduce the use of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The MSA language is faded by some students because they study in private schools and spend more time with their maids. Consequently, losing our MSA language will lead to a loss of our national identity. Most private schools focus primarily on the English language in almost all subjects except geography, history, Islamic education and Arabic. Perhaps some private schools have optional geography and history subjects, which means that the student can choose whether he wants to study them in English or Arabic. Besides that, MSA courses and Islamic education courses are held two or three times a week, which is less than...... half of the paper ......13).
