The Spanish Civil War took place in Spain mainly during the years 1936-1939. This civil war was the result of a military revolt against the republican government that controlled Spain at the time. This military uprising was led by a military coup, which attempted to take control of the entire Spanish country, but failed, starting the Civil War. As in any other civil war, there were two sides fighting against each other, the nationalists and the fascists. Nationalists were also known as rebels, receiving aid from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The Republicans, the other side of the war, received aid from the Soviet Union, Europe and the United States. Although this civil war began following the rebels' failed attempt to conquer the country, they had reasons behind their revolt. On the other hand, the republicans/fascists were the educated middle class, being the urban workers of the country. Nationalists were seen to be somewhat better than fascists because of the positions they occupied relative to others. The rebels continued their fighting, eventually leading to the capture of important regions of Spain, such as the Canary Islands in July 1936. . Their government is almost a democratic type of government and that is why these people can speak out against it and fear that if the law is passed, they and other Spanish citizens will not be allowed to have a say that is important to them, or that their opinion will not be examined or taken seriously.
