When graphic design began, it was much simpler than it is today. Most people assume that graphic design is only done on sophisticated computers and operating systems, when in reality graphic design is much more complex than that. Graphic design has its roots in early caveman drawings using stone, organic paints and charcoal. Since these early humans had little verbal communication, logic dictates that they should have communicated instead with a plethora of symbols and graphic representations of ideas. Over time, visual communication methods, as well as verbal communication, have evolved. Materials in graphic design have become more refined such as digital or traditional printing. Some of the milestones of graphic design were the invention of printing presses, text-based design such as typography, molds and computers. Art stencils were one of the first revolutionary things to happen in graphic design. The molds allowed the mass production of certain objects, letters, or shapes that would otherwise have taken several hours or even days to create. Once the molds were created, they could then be used to replicate their shape by filing them with clay, stone, cement, ink and other artistic materials. Molds can be made in various shapes and sizes, allowing artists to create precise works from different templates. Molds were also used in the inking process, although the way the mold is used is slightly different. The molds used for typing and other forms of inking were initially created in three pieces: The Punch, Matrix, and the Mold itself. The punch was used to physically imprint the desired letter into a softer material, typically a metal such as copper, known as Matrix. The matrix was then placed in the type mold… in the center of the paper… ds of pixels, where previously the pixel count typically did not exceed a thousand.
