Topic > Living in a Modern Zoo - 1438

The modern zoo has been around for centuries: the first zoo was founded in 1748. Zoos have evolved enormously since then. Many standard zoos offer a variety of activities for visitors, but little has been done to provide the animals with adequate care, sufficient space and variety. Traditional zoo enclosures rarely match each animal's natural environment, especially for large ones, as everything is simply too small and too condensed. Zoos must reinvest and renovate their facilities and organization for the better of the animals and spectators. There are over 100 zoos and wildlife collections across Canada. Humans have always had an interest in learning about and studying wild animals. Unfortunately, many zoos operate solely for profit. Nowadays the public is much more informed about the needs of animals, such as their emotional and physical health. Many people want to see change. Animal health is at risk. Traditional zoos in Canada should be banned because animal welfare is negatively affected, they provide little educational value, and they do not serve as effective conservation practices. Animal welfare is not well looked after in zoos. Some might argue that zoos attempt to house animals in the most natural environment possible. Despite some improvements, many animals in traditional zoos continue to experience health problems and stereotypical behavior due to small enclosures (see figure 1). The lack of space for zoos is insufficient, and keeping animals isolated in a not very large area is harmful to animal health. “Studies have found that lions in zoos spend 48% of their time pacing and that 40% of elephants engage in stereotypical behavior” (Sad Eyes & Hollow Lives).
