"I'm a golden god," Russell Hammond shouts from a rooftop as he's about to dive into a pool following a bad acid trip. The iconic rock-n-roll scene of inflated egos and uptight rock stars. However, this is a rare occurrence in Almost Famous. It's the story of a boy, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), who becomes a man as he learns the culture of rock 'n' roll with his one true friend, his tape recorder. Fifteen year old William is traveling with the band Stillwater to interview them for a Rolling Stone article, and has many interesting experiences along the way. Some of these include letting all the groupies stay in his room, almost crashing a plane with the band, and falling in love with the illustrious Penny Lane. However, the plot is also carried forward by a variety of other characters. Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) is the lead guitarist and the most famous person in the band. He constantly gives the impression of being better than everyone else in the band and, as the singer states, he should have been, "the guitarist with mystique". Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) is the leader of the Band Aides. The best description of her is given by Roger Ebert: “She's not a groupie, she explains indignantly, but a Band Aide. She's obviously a groupie, but she has so many theories about her role that it's almost as if sex is a philosophical exercise for her. Penny romances Russell, who is married, while they are on tour. Penny is essentially William's guide to the world of rock-n-roll. Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is the editor of Cream magazine.
