There are always different areas and beliefs in big cities, but in some cities they are taken to a whole new level. Everyone is proud of their natural origins, whether it's their sports team, schools, or maybe a famous product that originated there. There is a very well known divide in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, where there appears to be a highway or street that creates an invisible line. Cincinnati is well known for its education, food, and the diverse lifestyles that can be experienced in the rather large suburban area. If someone asks a Cincinnatian where they are from, they will proudly respond with Westside or Eastside! Common phrases you may hear are: "Better side of the Westside or cheap side of the Eastside." It is not necessarily true that someone is considered good or bad because of their response; it's just a source of pride for them. Westsiders are known to be strongly conservative, typically working-class; Very family oriented and strong willed Catholics who never leave. When someone from the Westside is asked where they went to school, the typical answer is their high school. This is not because they stop pursuing their studies after high school, but it is more symbolic for them. This institution for the rest of their lives will label them in some sense. In any case there is not much difference in the quality of education; it's more of a rivalry between sports, as you might say. The Westside has Elder, Oak Hills, St. Xavier and LaSalle; which are all very good schools and well recognized for their academic results. These institutions are rated excellent year after year by the Ohio State Board of Education for their continued academic success. Alumni of these schools are very…middle of the road…winning the pennant. For all their differences, one can't help but notice that without the random invisible line we've come to know, Cincinnati wouldn't be Cincinnati. Both areas are great places to live and raise a family, and while there seems to be this big gap, everything is easily accessible via highways and transportation. Most people growing up in Cincinnati can't wait to get out, but once they leave they can't. I can't wait to return as there is nowhere else like it. It has the small town “home” feel that everyone comes to love, along with easily accessible big city options. No one ever wants to come to Cincinnati, but once they do, they realize how special it is, regardless of the territory. Its unique structure is a surprising yet joyful experience and that is what makes it special. East or west, north or south Chi-Dey, honey!
