Thomas Jefferson in his letter to Nehemiah Dodge states: "The legislative powers of the government reach only to actions and not to opinions...thus building a wall of separation between Church and State."( Jefferson) The concept of separation of religion from state has been a battle that has endured in the furnace of time. While some might argue that religion and state should not be conflated, a presumably equal population will agree that religion and state should not be separated. This contribution will reflect on the history of religion and the state using the Church as a point of reference. He will briefly discuss the existence of the Church before it merged with the State, the Church when it became one with the State, and the subsequent separation throughout the 16th century into the modern 21st century. The focus on the separation of the Church will be observed and important revolutionary historical discoveries will be observed in the fields of natural law, technology, medicine and other disciplines. The early Church witnessed it after the death and subsequent ascension of Jesus Christ. It was established and maintained by his apostles. The early Church suffered severe persecution and trials. One of his persecutors, who became the apostle Paul, was responsible for planting churches throughout the Roman Empire. Christianity was gradually spreading like fire on a bush. The Roman gods were perceived as threatened, thus causing Christians to be persecuted and even executed. This continued until Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity as his faith and subsequently made it the state religion. Constantine then allowed an edict called……medium of paper……with. Now, considering a multi-religious society or state, how will the nation fare if one religion guides the law and affairs of the state? It will definitely cause discontent among other religious followers. Works Cited BBC News Science & Environment. September 21, 2010. November 13, 2010.
