An apple a day keeps the doctor away is a statement that everyone knows quite well. But what exactly does an apple offer our body to make this statement true? As I look at my refrigerator hoping that something in there will inspire me to finally find a topic to write about, I realized how much money I spend eating fruit. After breakfast I grab an apple to eat on the way to work. After I get home from work and before going to the gym I have an apple. There's something about an apple that catches my attention and I gravitate towards them when I'm looking for something to eat. Even though I consider myself a healthy eater, most people, including myself, consume food without full knowledge of the benefits or harm it does to our bodies. Choosing to write about apples seemed rather simplistic and trivial, but the fact of the matter is that I don't know the full extent of what makes an apple healthy. Add to that why someone chose an apple to create a statement about how it can keep doctors away. Sure this statement was made as a metaphor for eating healthy and having a healthy lifestyle, but why choose an apple when you have many fruit options to choose from? I was determined to find out. I had to make this research a little fun for me, especially when my topic focused on apples and not some amazing exotic fruit that destroys tumors and helps heal the world. To start, I asked my boss, coworkers, family members, and a couple of strangers what makes an apple keep doctors away. At first they thought I was perpetuating a ruse since I was holding an old tape recorder while they gave an answer, but once I told them it was for a school project, they agreed to participate. After reviewing some of the answers to my question...... middle of paper...... minimizes tooth decay by reducing bacteria levels. According to Webmd, “Other food choices include firm/crisp fruits (e.g. apples and pears) and vegetables. These foods have a high water content, which dilutes the effects of the sugars they contain and stimulates the flow of saliva (which helps protect against decay by washing away food particles and buffering acid). I would be surprised if there was a single person on earth who has never been introduced to the apple; it is perhaps the most widespread fruit in the world. Many places offer a variety of delicious yet affordable apples. So the next time you eat one, stop and think for a moment about how underrated they are and that bite you're about to take may have delayed the inevitable trip to the doctors and perhaps the dentist.
