Dianne Baumrind's Three Parenting Styles Lena Logie Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Introduction: Baumrind believed there were four parts to parent-child interactions: parental control, maturity needs, and clarity of communication and education. “Parental control” is related to issues such as enforcement of rules. The “maturity demand” is the parents' expectation that their children will develop to their full potential. “Clarity of communication” reflects parents' willingness to communicate with their children, solicit their opinions, and use reasoning to achieve desired behavior. “Nurturance” is closely associated with parental expressions of warmth and approval and assurance of children's physical and emotional well-being. Using these four parts, Baumrind is well known for four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive-indulgent, and permissive-involved (Greenwood, 2014). These parenting styles are recognizable patterns of parental care and communication with children (Coon & Mittterer, 2013). Authoritative: The authoritative style is known as the “ideal” parenting style and appears to cause more children to emerge with high levels of self-awareness. confidence and self-esteem, who are socially responsible, liberated and success-oriented according to Education .com. Authoritative parents set clear expectations and have high principles. They keep an eye on their children's behavior, use reasoning-based discipline, and inspire their children to make choices and learn from their mistakes. They are also loving and caring parents, offering their children kindness, respect and affection (Greenwood, 2014). These parents provide firm and constant guidance, combined with love and affection (Coon & Mittterer...... middle of paper...... willingness to connect with their children, solicit their opinions, and use reasoning to attract attention- for behavior, and “Nurturance” is related to parents' expressions of warmth and support and protection of children's physical and emotional well-being.
