Negative Leadership BehaviorThere are many examples of bad leadership behavior in today's workplace. Inadequate leadership can be harmful not only to a team within an organization, but also to the entire organization itself. I believe it is critical for senior management to ensure their leaders are properly trained and aware of how to handle certain situations and employees. When a leader's weaknesses are overlooked, major problems occur. Example of Negative Leadership In my previous workplace, I had many effective and helpful leaders. I also had some that were a little crappy and some that were downright awful. There was one leader who particularly struck me as an example of negative leadership behavior. She was a pleasant person, very pleasant and hard working, but she possessed a serious leadership flaw that constantly caused frustration and prevented her and her employees from advancing. The flaw my previous leader possessed was an inability or refusal to delegate. Delegation is the act of giving some sort of power or responsibility to another person. This supervisor was a self-proclaimed workaholic, who consistently refused to place responsibility on his employees. Additionally, an employee who came to you with a problem or assistance would be told that this supervisor would simply “take care of it.” In many cases, this would be the last time the employee would learn of the situation. Many employees had worked for years and knew there was no point in arguing or trying to stay involved in the situation until it was resolved. This supervisor was also always under a lot of stress and always seemed tired and overworked. He still refused to assign responsibility to others,... middle of paper... ship is probably very common today. If only more leaders were aware of this, I believe this could be avoided in many cases. Such a seemingly small thing can cause so much damage in an organization, whether internally, externally, or both. It's unfortunate that misconceptions, such as the belief that a greater workload demonstrates greater dedication, can cause such harm to a company's success. However, with proper knowledge and education on the subject, these situations can and should be reversed and improved. Works CitedBlack Enterprise, (September 2010). Losing control.
