A hero can be defined in many different ways. The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition is “a person admired for great or courageous acts or excellent qualities.” Society sees a hero as a person who does things that a normal person wouldn't normally do or who has qualities that make him or her highly regarded. Heroes have influenced society for as long as humanity has existed, because almost everyone has their own definition of what, or who, a hero is. Elie Wiesel, the author of the novel Night, talked about what he defined as what a hero is. the hero should do. Night details the hardships Wiesel experienced during the Holocaust, when he and his family were persecuted and sent to concentration camps. This quote comes from his acceptance speech when he received the Nobel Prize in 1986. “Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.
