What is the importance of sound in TV or film and how can it be used creatively to advance the narrative? Sound is important in films and how it is used to guide a narrative progression. I will analyze how and why in this essay. It's about the history of sound in film and the essential component it plays in the film industry. The introduction of sound into film began in the 1920s. By the 1930s the vast majority of films were now talkies. 'If you put a sound consistent with the visual image and specifically with the human voice, you make a “talkie”' (Braun 1985 p. 97). In 1926 Warner Brothers introduced sound into cinema but other competing studios such as FOX did not find it necessary to incorporate sound into their film production, as they made enough money through their silent films. Warner Brothers decided to take what was considered a risky move by adding sound to their film, a risk they took, as they had not been as successful in the silent film department. But this risk paid off with the release of "The Jazz Singer" in 1927. Although sound in films was then acceptable and successful, it was only in the 1950s that it became feasible for audiences when sound was introduced into cinema thanks to Fred Waller's invention of Cinerama. Cinerama used 35mm film and seven channels of sound. The use of sound has been greatly developed and is now considered "one of the richest sources of meaning in cinematic art". (Giannetti, 2002). When examining sound in film, one must take two positions; digital sound and non-digetic sound. These positions refer to the basics of sound in film and television. For example, digetic sound refers to the sound that materializes within the creation of the film (if a character h...... center of the card ......n, the use of sound in films is very significant in the development of the plot and consequently the development of the theme. Although the sound components individually play a very significant role, it is through the combination and manipulation of such components that the sound design of the soundtrack has a greater emotional impact on the addition , the effectiveness of this emotional impact can be significantly increased through the implementation of an effective combination of sounds in the image. Such a combination can be seen in Gravity which displays a soundscape that successfully helps bring the world to life of the film. Sound is important for films and is an essential feature, many times the audience will not even consciously recognize the music or sound effects, but if they were not there the viewing pleasure would not be so enjoyable.
