When films are based on novels, they are most likely not as well acted and written as the original books, although there are some exceptions such as Forest Gump. As proof, I believe Baz Luhrmann's production of The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the 1920s, was not executed at its best. Baz Luhrmann did well with the special effects; however, it failed to portray the characters, symbols, and setting well. The special effects that Baz Luhrmann decided to use were spectacular and he chose the most perfect music and three-dimensional images. Luhrmann did a great job choosing the music for the film's scenes and the soundtrack. He chose a particular song that suited the themes, scenes and plot of the film. This song was "Young and Beautiful" by Lana del Rey and was played throughout the film as the melody and rhythm changed depending on the scene. He also chose “A Little Party Never Killed Anyone,” “100$ Bill” and “Into The Past.” I believe that the choice of these songs was useful to Luhrmann because it attracted younger and more modern audiences to the film when they heard a song they knew or liked. Luhrmann's three-dimensional scenes were also spectacular. For example, the scene where Myrtle Wilson was hit by Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, caused the glass to shatter outwards and show her corpse flying towards the screen. This scene was very graphic and intrigued the audience. Luhrmann had perfect ideas on what to use when it came to special effects, making the film very comparable and in some ways better than the novel. The portrayal of the characters in Luhrmann's edition of the film was not as well represented as the special effects. I think Luhrmann didn't take... half of the card... more and more colorful with the shimmering touch of silver and gold accents. Ultimately, some might say that Luhrmann did an amazing job in making the film just as wonderful as the novel but in my opinion it didn't meet my expectations. In addition to not portraying characters, symbols and settings of coitus with the book, some scenes did not connect. For example, as written in the novel, "Myrtle Wilson... knelt in the street," when she was hit, Luhrmann decided to make her lie down. Luhrmann also decided to change her clothes so he could see the wound on her chest since in the book it said they had to take her dress off. In conclusion, The Great Gatsby, filmed in 2013, had no comparison to the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the 1920s. Luhrmann's 2013 edition failed to portray the characters, symbols and setting, as well as the special effects.
