“Until the development of the MP3, major labels welcomed technological innovations as opportunities to resell the same music over and over again at greater profits” (qtd. in Hracs 445). As the years have passed, technological advancements have significantly influenced music production. The lack of industrial control, job fluctuation, along with uncertainty in surrounding fields of work, and the process of individualization and corporate management among independent musicians are the result of this technological acquisition. For starters, it is known that musicians had to be signed to record labels to gain traction with their careers, otherwise it would be known that their careers would fail. However, this has changed with the coming technology shock. “As file sharing eroded the power of the major labels and wiped out these music retailers, new distribution channels, companies, and power relations began to emerge” (Hracs 449). The music industry and technological progress have gone hand in hand, with the compact disc being used as one of the few sources of music playback. Since the introduction of MP3, Internet music sharing has been a major factor contributing to the collapse of record labels, and has been so since 2001. “Recent developments in online music distribution suggest that it is not so much the availability of music on the Internet that concerns the majors of the music industry but rather the fact that it is free” (Gündüz 205). This included the piracy of songs from online file sharing networks, which hit the industry with full force. ” According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), CD sales have been continuously declining (with the exception of the status quo in 2004) from 2.5 billion units in 2000 to… half of paper… . ernments and lack of managerial and marketing support make it more difficult to make a living solely from music” (Hracs 460). The music industry has become a contradiction for music artists. It's easy to get involved, but it's difficult to turn it into a stable career. Technology has put the music industry into a whirlwind. It brought the possibility of bankruptcy for major record labels and a new way for people around the world to share music, legally or illegally. The term producer began to mean much more and became one of the most important jobs in the music industry. A musician embodies the businessman and works diligently to earn a living. Music production has come a long way in the twenty-first century. Technological change in the music industry could prove revolutionary. One day, it might even change the world in more ways than one.
