Imagine yourself sitting in your home, cooking dinner or quietly reading a book when there is a knock on the door. You get up, answer the door and the guest enters. As a host, you welcome your guests and little to no problems arise because they are invited and expected guests. Now, imagine again that you are in your house cooking or reading, when an unexpected and uninvited guest enters through the window or even approximately through the door. In this second scenario, various issues, problems and potential dangers emerge. The two scenarios presented illustrate immigration to the United States. The first scenario where guests were expected and invited illustrates legal and legitimate immigration where immigrants take the proper and legal channels to be in the United States. The second scenario illustrates illegal immigration. This article focuses on illegal immigration and discusses how illegal immigration is a costly financial burden on the United States, and therefore, instead of trying to find ways to legitimize the citizenship status of illegal immigrants, the government should have policies stricter measures that discourage illegal immigration, strengthen border security and improve the pathways necessary for legal immigration. Immigration is deeply rooted in the history of the United States. Many immigrants bring rich, new knowledge, benefits, and new experiences to the United States in culture, academics, business, and many other areas. It is not argued here that immigration should be stopped and that borders should be closed to all non-citizens. This is a disservice to the country. Illegal immigration is the issue at hand. Illegal immigration is expensive and the taxpayers who pay the price... mid-paper... may be too radical a solution, but Arizona Congressman J.D. Hayworth says , “the majority of Americans want the troops deployed at the border as a temporary measure to stop illegal crossings." This information demonstrates that if this measure were adopted, it would have the support of the majority of US citizens. Americans want the government to step in and take action against the growing problem of illegal immigration, so the government should take action to do so. While some may believe that unless something radical needs to be done to address the problem, one solution that can be effective is to take small steps to solve the problem by insisting that the government continually try to take action by passing laws in legislature that can adequately address the complex issue of illegal immigration while at the same time respecting the history of legal and legitimate immigration.
