What is organic food? “Organic food is food produced using environmentally and animal-friendly cultivation methods on organic farms.” (Soil Association). The organic sector has become one of the fastest growing sectors today. Canadian Organic Trade Association (COTA) audit shows Canadian market growth increasing to $3.7 billion in 2012. (Natalie Cajic, The Evolution of Organics). Although food is expensive and higher than conventional food, why do people buy organic food? There are many points regarding organic products that can benefit the human race for their consumption. They use fewer chemical pesticides, have more nutritional value and are grown in a very environmentally friendly way compared to conventional foods. In the article “Organic vs Conventional” (Andrew W, Campbell) you read a cited article entitled “Are organic foods safer or healthier than conventional alternatives?” in which the article describes the study of organic and conventional agriculture as "The purpose of this study is to comprehensively summarize the published literature on the health, nutritional, and safety characteristics of organic and conventional foods." Precise production standards and pesticide-free requirements are an integral part of the identification and labeling of these products. As for chemicals, organic farming refrains from the use of “synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, fungicides, veterinary drugs, preservatives and synthetic additives” (Shepherd et al.3). Therefore, hazardous residues in organic foods are limited to the smallest amount possible. In fact, much research has shown that the harmfulness of pesticide residues on half the paper......and the lower levels of CO2 emissions on organic farms are mainly due to lower energy inputs because fewer fossil fuels are used. burned. Organic farms are generally smaller than conventional ones and therefore the average energy input per area is lower. Therefore, the energy saving feature of organic farms is another aspect of environmental conservation. The growing prosperity of the organic food industry indicates greater public health concern because organic foods contain more nutrients essential for good health. Less pesticide residue is another advantage of organic foods because exposure to pesticides can cause various health problems. As people value protecting the environment more than ever, the positive environmental impacts of organic farming, such as biodiversity, better soil quality and lower CO2 emissions, are also benefits of organic foods.
