As a child I remember being intrigued by the motto "In God We Trust" printed on dollar bills and engraved on coins. In which God do we trust? Is the God we trust Jesus? Why do we trust in him? These were just a few questions that came to mind. With all the greed and capitalist corruption that exists in society, how could men fight for money which reminds us of “In God We Trust”. I was convinced that this statement was symbolic of the authority God had within the trading system. Surely if God had no place in business, we would not proclaim our trust in him on the very currency we spend. I propose that it is ethically correct for the motto “In God We Trust” to be printed on our currency in the United States. Have we forgotten the Scriptures? The book of Ecclesiastes 10:19 states: “…? But money answers all things.”? The Scriptures have always made provisions for man's problems in this natural world. So is it far-fetched to believe that the very fabric of business is woven into the foundation of the Judeo-Christian faith? For those who would say "no", then I ask; why is this statement “Of God we Trust” still printed on our currency in the United States? Obviously our founding fathers had a higher moral premise in mind when this was decided. Taking these factors into consideration led me to investigate the validity and value of this statement. Is the motto “In God We Trust” an ethical mistake as it relates to business principles? To this question I answer “no”. I will examine these issues in my argumentative essay. The inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” was placed on United States coins largely because of the heightened religious sentiment that existed during the Civil War.
