The art represents the human nature of that time. The film “Next Floor” by Denis Villeneuve shows human nature and its effect on “polite” society through the formal dinner setting. The film begins with a dinner with eleven guests in a contemporary setting. The waiters serve one dish after another and the guests continue to eat, without worrying about other guests. Furthermore, with each dish the speed of consumption increases. As the dinner reaches its peak, a banging sound is heard and the entire floor falls beneath them. The Maitre D speaks into the microphone saying just two words: “next floor” and the entire staff runs downstairs to reset dinner. This continues and guests continue to fall. Finally, the waiters and musicians wait for the guests, but the guests continue to fall floor after floor and the film ends. “Next Floor” demonstrates the violence of “polite” society through the depiction of food and guest behavior, ultimately providing a critique of how we use natural resources. They never seem to run out of natural resources. "Next Floor" shows how "polite" society uses resources in a violent way, through the depiction of foods that seem to never end. The dinner represents "polite" society through the guests' clothing, the dinner setting with food and wine, and the waiters who dressed well. The waiters continuously serve dish after dish showing the endless food source. As the dinner continues, the expression of bizarre food represents violence. The brain-shaped half of the oyster represents the human brain which symbolizes how many human beings were sacrificed for that food. The embryo-shaped meat represents the violence and evil nature of polite society as guests do not hesitate to eat it. Finally the heart on the field with t...... middle of paper...... to say what is right. Villeneuve carefully chooses to depict the effect of surrounding violence on non-violent people. As the violence continues, more and more people join the violence rather than stand out in society. "Next Floor" represents the "polite" society in which, despite the abundance of natural resources, the way society uses natural resources is less attractive and violent. in nature. Violence always prevails in those societies despite there being an abundance of resources and this violence increases with the consumption of natural resources. The film sends the message that the “polite” society should consume natural resources in a less violent and attractive way, otherwise the whole world will fall into the next level of misery, deep down, where no one could help it.
