The influence of the media has only increased over the past five centuries, especially with the advent and advancement of technologies within our society. Now access to the media is no longer limited to the bourgeois. Palmer (1989) cited exposure to education and information as an important agent of change. Education, together with media exposure, diminishes the power of traditional societies and provides new ideas and describes alternative lifestyles. Nigerian society has evolved to become more urbanized and education oriented, this process of social modernization has accelerated and made the media more available especially with privatization in the media. Content is no longer limited to a few channels with the increase in the number of private media companies in the country. Privatization and deregulation have caused a rapid increase in the number of media owners. 95% of the media is now owned by private companies. Their influence has given rise to the commercialization of media and caused a paradigm shift from a focus on education and information to a focus on entertainment, as well as experiencing a loss of indigenous content when it comes to dissemination and support of social values as a function of the media. (Onuora et al, 2003) What media influence society The degree to which the media influences the public depends on the availability and pervasiveness of the media. • Books: One of the earliest forms of literature still exerts great influence because it serves as a reference point for ideas even after their authors are long gone • Newspapers and magazines: They are equally influential because they are able to reach the base• Sound recordings and films: especially in Nollywood, Peo... ... middle of paper ...... ty, premarital sex Impacts on adults: Statistics show married people live longer, healthier lives , happier and more motivated. 85% of truly rich people are married. Impact on society: Statistics show that divorced people are unhappy, unmotivated and demoralized, which makes for an economically and morally unproductive society. In the West, they are experiencing an astronomical divorce rate. This affects the content that is fed into their media and which reaches us via satellite communication as content on TV and the Internet. We must be aware that the values we hold, the beliefs we hold, and the decisions we make are based on our assumptions, our experiences, our education, and what we know for sure. The media does not set the agenda to attract attention attracted by rising divorce rates and the loss of traditional family life.
