SettingThe story takes place in several locations. The story begins in St. Botolphs, Massachusetts, where the majority of the story takes place. Most of the characters were born and raised there. Parts of the story also take place in New York City, Washington D.C., Oahu, and Island 93. New York City, Oahu, and Island 93 are where some characters go to work. Washington DC is where one of the main characters, Moses Wapshot, moves to and gets his first job. Plot The Wapshot Chronicle is the story of a family living in the small town of St. Botolphs, Massachusetts, and their adventures. There are a number of significant events in the story. A very important event is when Moses Wapshot leaves to go to Washington D.C. Moses' brother Coverly sneaks onto the train and leaves with him. This is when the boys' journeys begin. Their travels are the crux of the story. The boys' parents do not know that Coverly left with Moses until they find a note from Coverly saying that he had done so. Moses will go to Washington to find a job and Coverly will travel to New York to visit his aunt and uncle. Coverly plans to work for his uncle. However, when Coverly arrives in New York City, he is rejected due to his lack of knowledge and inner confusion. Another important event is when Leander Wapshot's boat, the Topaze, sinks. When this happens, Leander retrieves it and he and his wife turn it into the city's only floating souvenir shop. Other notable events are when Coverly Wapshot gets married and when Moses Wapshot gets married. Coverly marries a woman named Betsey. Moses marries a girl named Melissa. Both couples have many difficulties. Coverly and Betsey have to move around a lot because... halfway... to find a job and survive on his own, which has proven to be very difficult for him. He probably could have stayed home with his parents and taken care of him for a few more years if he hadn't. I think the author has exposed these issues clearly and effectively. Personal Relevance The book taught me to be happy with what I have and not to rush life. Additionally, the book taught me to help others when they are in need. If I did what Coverly did in the book, I would have a very difficult time looking for work and surviving. I feel like I'm too young to work and support myself, and I have no money for food or shelter. Honora Wapshot taught me the importance of helping other people when they are in need. He lets a stranger into his house just because that person has had a terrible accident and needs help. This was a very kind and generous thing to do.
