Topic > The Impact of Choices on Spirituality in Hermann...

A person's life choices will affect their spirituality and inner being as they continue in life. Their choices lead them down different paths, which over time will influence their spirituality, positivity and happiness. The novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse illustrates Siddhartha's spiritual journey and path to enlightenment. Siddhartha's journey will bring him closer to his inner spirit. Siddhartha's life clearly shows how a person's daily choices influence his or her spirituality. “Spirituality: the quality or state of being spiritual,” spirit meaning: “a life-giving force” or “a force within a person believed to be capable of endowing the body with life, energy and power: soul” (Britannica School ) “Your soul is the whole world” (Hesse 7). Siddhartha continually talks about his inner spirit and constantly desires to achieve his goal of becoming one with the spirit, to achieve enlightenment. He wants the ability to live life fully and feel power over his own mind and body. Many people share this common desire of wanting to be one with their soul, feel power over their body, and experience happiness by altering their desires. When a person begins to make decisions that do not move them forward, they will begin to drift away from their spirit. Choice is defined as "the act of choosing: selection" or "power to choose: option", choosing means "to select according to preferences especially after an examination" (Britannica School). When a person has the right to choose, he has the right to decide for himself, he has the ability to choose right or wrong. Every person has the right to their own life choices, and every choice carries a reward or consequence. Life throws curveballs at everyone, every single person... middle of paper... lifestyle, which will impact their spirituality in the long run. People make simple decisions like choosing to eat fruit instead of junk food and walking to work instead of taking public transportation. These choices lead to a healthier mind, body and soul. A person who chooses to eat healthy will not regret it in the future, while someone who often eats fast food will regret it because his body will not be healthy. These simple daily choices lead us down millions of different paths from which millions of other paths branch off. People who exercise and eat healthily often feel good about themselves; this brings them closer to their spirit. It provides them with happiness and energy and clearly shows that a person's decisions can impact their spirituality. Works Cited Hesse, Hermann, Siddhartha, New Delhi: Rupa Publications, 2003
