“A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a short story written by author Flannary O'Connor that describes a family's family vacation in Georgia. The story focuses more on the grandmother as her thoughts are shown to the reader, unlike the other characters where the reader has no sense of their thoughts or feelings. Family is an important concept throughout the story as it plays a vital role in the progression of events. The family brings the family to death and the roles that each character played throughout the story. For starters, an escaped convict is mentioned quite often as he has made himself famous in the local media. Grandma adorns herself with beautiful dresses and flowers, as a lady would dress. Grandmother by nature is very indulgent and stubborn in considering herself the most important thing. This is easily reflected in his nephews who are very obnoxious and by definition behave exactly like brats. During the story the grandmother passes a local farm and remembers ancient times and how the farm contained a hidden passage. The mention of this secret passage excites the two children, June Star and John Wesley, and their complaints finally convince their father, Bailey, to stop by. Furthermore, the grandmother remembers that the farm she was thinking of was not in Georgia, their current location, and shortly thereafter the family crashes their car. The mother's shoulder is broken in the resulting accident and the car is then inspected by a group of three men. Grandma screams when she recognizes that one of the gentlemen is the infamous Misfit. Grandma is soon left begging and pleading for her life as she tries to convince the Misfit that Jesus will forgive him. Family… at the center of the card… is each other. This would make it quite easy for the Misfit to perceive his grandmother as a reflection of his mother. In the story presumably everyone gets shot only once, since a gunshot was fired for each person. Everyone hit was hit by fellow Misfits except Grandma. Grandma was shot three times and by none other than the Misfit himself. Family is an important part of this tale as they are the reason why the events happened. It's the reason the family continued their journey. It's the reason they stopped on that farm, they convinced the children to their mother. And that's the reason they ultimately died. Grandma and the Misfit show two sides of the family. Grandma takes care of her family and sees value in them. In contrast, the Misfit seems to only want to sever any ties he has to his family.
